Title
ILCE: Trialling environmental sensors in Tanzanian Schools – First pilot
Abstract
This report presents the findings from the first pilot of the Improving Learning Through Classroom Experience (ILCE) programme, which tested environmental sensors in Tanzanian schools to assess indoor learning conditions. Conducted at Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School in Dar es Salaam, the pilot aimed to evaluate commercially available sensors and OpenDevEd’s custom-built environmental monitoring device. Key objectives included testing temperature, humidity, lighting, and sound sensors, ensuring measurement accuracy, and determining optimal data logging intervals for long-term deployment. Results showed minimal variation in temperature and humidity readings across different devices, with differences within 0.5°C and 1% humidity, respectively. However, lighting measurements varied due to differences in sensor sensitivity. The findings informed adjustments to sensor placement and data collection intervals, ensuring accurate and representative environmental monitoring. The findings highlight the need for scalable, cost-effective solutions for improving classroom environments in resource-constrained settings. Future research will focus on refining sensor accuracy, integrating additional parameters such as air quality, and testing sensors in occupied classrooms. By leveraging real-time environmental monitoring, this initiative contributes to data-driven policy recommendations for enhancing learning conditions in Tanzanian schools, supporting sustainable and climate-resilient education infrastructure.
