Although there are options available for building health workers’ and health policy makers’ capacity to become stronger leaders (i.e. as public health leaders or managers), there is little evidence that specific training or courses lead to sustainably better leadership and management skills. It is argued that the most effective types of capacity building processes to improve leadership skills in the health sector are monthly intensive training (e.g. ‘Global Nursing Policy Leadership...

The second meeting of the International Collaboration for Automation of Systematic Reviews (ICASR) was held 3–4 October 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. ICASR is an interdisciplinary group whose aim is to maximize the use of technology for conducting rapid, accurate, and efficient systematic reviews of scientific evidence. Having automated tools for systematic review should enable more transparent and timely review, maximizing the potential for identifying and translating research...

Global Citizenship Education (GCED) aims to empower learners of all ages to assume active roles, both locally and globally, in building more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive and secure societies. GCED is based on the three domains of learning - cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioural. Cognitive: knowledge and thinking skills necessary to better understand the world and its complexities. Socio-emotional: values, attitudes and social skills that enable learners to develop affectively,...

A substantial literature has established the role of the inner organizational setting on the implementation of evidence-based practices in community contexts, but very little of this research has been extended to the education sector, one of the most common settings for the delivery of mental and behavioral health services to children and adolescents. The current study examined the factor structure, psychometric properties, and interrelations of an adapted set of pragmatic organizational...

This paper explores a pilot project in which three VET teachers in an Australian dual-sector university trialled a scholarship framework by undertaking a small ethnographic inquiry into current practices in their respective industries. The framework defined a method for engaging with industry while simultaneously developing VET teacher capability in scholarly practice. The teachers were asked to reflect on their experience of engaging in a scholarly project and how new knowledge has been...

The paper discusses the role of systematic evidence in helping make better decisions to reach global development targets. Coming at the end of the first decade of serious funding and support for systematic evidence generation in development economics and development studies, the paper presents opportunities and challenges for the continued development of systematic review methodologies. It concludes by introducing the papers collected in the issue, which make and demonstrate the case for theory-based approaches to evidence synthesis.

It has been common to say that studies should address not just the question of what works, but also how, where, for whom and at what cost? A unifying framework for such an approach is the theory of change. This paper lays out an approach for using such a theory-based approach to systematic reviews, discussing issues which arise in mixed-methods causal chain analysis. I illustrate the funnel of attrition which is a heuristic device to understand why effect sizes are lower at the higher...

The study investigated the training needs of basic science teachers in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study. The survey design was adopted for the study. The population adopted for the study was 531 basic science teachers in Makurdi Local Government Area with 230 as the sample of the study. A 15-item structured questionnaire constructed by the researcher entitled Training Needs of Basic Science Teachers Questionnaire (TNBSC) was...

The study examined the strategies for improving pre-service training of student-teachers for quality assurance in secondary school curriculum implementation in Enugu State, Nigeria. Two research questions which used public opinion design guided the study. Using accidental and purposive sampling techniques, the study sampled three hundred (300) education students in two teachers’ training institutions in Enugu State. A questionnaire was used for data collection. Mean and standard deviation...

The Philippines is among the most exposed countries to natural hazards. Little is known about impacts of different natural hazards on academic gains or losses of cohorts of school children. Data from 33,704 elementary and 6337 secondary public schools (2009–2014) on typhoons, flood, earthquakes, and use as an evacuation center were analyzed. Provinces that are heavily populated and located near inland bodies of water are vulnerable to floods and those in the eastern side of the country are...

Introduction: For effective bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to be achievable, potential bystander CPR providers must be able to retain sufficient CPR knowledge for a reasonable time frame after training. This study aimed at ascertaining the retained CPR theoretical knowledge of some Nigerian teachers after 15 months of CPR training. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental study design was used. From the initial cohort of forty one (41) teachers, thirty one (31) of them...

The energy consumption for heating and cooling of buildings in the cities located within the boundaries of the Hot Summer and Cold Winter (HSCW) zone in China is rapidly increasing due to the increased comfort expectations from well-resourced occupants. Guidance on how and to what extent it is possible to improve energy efficiency of buildings is thus required by policy makers as well as designers and building managers. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the use of climate-sensitive...

This study presents the results of a meta-analytic study about the effects of digital game-based learning (DGBL) on vocabulary. The results of the study showed that the effects of DGBL on vocabulary learning may vary with game design features (Q = 5.857, df = 1, p = 0.016), but not with learners' age (Q = 0.906, df = 1, p = 0.341) or linguistic background (Q = 0.0001, df = 1, p = 0.994). In light of the research findings, Csikszentmihalyi's (1990) Flow Theory was adopted to theorize the role...

This inquiry examined student teachers' perceptions on the advantages of using Social Networking Services (SNS) in an English teacher education program at a public university in Jambi, Indonesia to ease the communication, supervision, discussion, and report submissions between supervisors and student teachers. The networking types included in the program are Whatsapp, Telegram, Email, and Google Form. The method of the research was qualitative through using focus group discussions as the...

Reduction of teacher and student absenteeism, together with consistent teacher support and training, are critical factors in improving the quality of education in rural India. As part of an ongoing project involving schools and educational centers in rural areas spread across 21 Indian states, this study investigated how implementation of two simple, accessible technologies could not only reduce absenteeism but also increase teachers' effectiveness and improve student performance. In...

Mobile devices are gaining more and more popularity in recent years. Researchers and practitioners took advantages of mobile devices to facilitate inquiry-based learning in the past decade. Although there were many studies that using mobile devices in inquiry-based learning, the systematic review of the effectiveness of integrating mobile devices with inquiry-based learning remained lacking. This meta-analysis examined 34 empirical studies with 2316 participants on integrating mobile devices...
